Please permit me to take a little of your time to present the Report on Our Anti-Cybercrime Sensitization programme organized for members of NYSC at Tickles Garden, Zone 5, Wuse District, Abuja on the 5th of July 2024.

OVERVIEW

On the 5th of July 2024, Family Joy International held a transformative anti-cybercrime sensitization programme for NYSC members at Tickles Garden, Zone 5, Wuse District, Abuja. Themed “Empowering A Cyber-Safe Generation,” this event aimed to arm corps members with the knowledge and tools to avoid becoming victims or perpetrators of cybercrime. Our overarching goal was to intercept potential cyber fraudsters early and protect our youth from falling prey to online scams.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To Prevent Early Involvement in Cyber Fraud: Educate corps members on the dangers and severe consequences of engaging in cybercrime.
  2. To Address Cyber Insecurity: Equip corps members with the skills to identify cyber threats and maintain online safety.
  3. To Provide Ethical Alternatives to Cyber Fraud: Empower corps members on alternative means of earning a legitimate income

Empowering a Cyber-Safe Generation and a Brighter Future for Nigeria

Keynote Address by Vincent Ekwo

Mr. Vincent Ekwo, the Executive Secretary of Family Joy International, set the tone with a powerful keynote address. He welcomed the participants and introduced our organization, emphasizing our mission to discourage youth participation in cybercrime and to protect them from becoming victims. Vincent highlighted the dual nature of the internet, offering great opportunities while also posing significant risks, especially for the youth. He underscored that engaging in cybercrime is illegal, unethical, and comes with harsh consequences. Vincent also presented ethical alternatives to cybercrime, such as ethical hacking, ethical AI, affiliate marketing, and cybersecurity architecture. He concluded by offering techniques to identify online scams and protect oneself from online threats.

Safe and Best Practices for Online Bank Transactions

Address by Uche Ndubuisi

Our Finance Director, Mr. Uche Ndubuisi, provided invaluable insights into safe online banking practices. He warned participants against sending OTPs for transactions they did not initiate and stressed the importance of caution when downloading mobile banking apps. His practical advice resonated strongly with the participants, highlighting the importance of vigilance in online financial transactions.

Importance of Being a Responsible and Good Digital Citizen

Address by Ifeanyi Kingsley Ogwudu

Mr. Ifeanyi Kingsley Ogwudu, Programme Director of Family Joy International, delivered a heartfelt speech on the importance of responsible online behaviour. He expressed deep concern over the alarming trend of cyberbullying among youth on social media platforms. Ifeanyi made it clear that online actions have real-world consequences, affecting reputations, relationships, and future opportunities, particularly during job hunts post-service. His examples of irresponsible online behaviour and its impacts were eye-opening for many participants.

Engaging Corps Members, Building Awareness, and Feedback

The corps members were highly engaged throughout the event, actively participating in discussions and sharing their own experiences with cyber scams. This interactive segment allowed both participants and organizers to learn from each other. The corps members expressed their appreciation for the organizers’ ability to present complex topics in a clear and engaging manner.
